We rely on ladders daily while installing low-voltage infrastructure, and proper use is critical. Here are a few key practices we follow to ensure safe, efficient work:
Choosing the Right Ladder
- Use the Right Type: Step ladders, extension ladders, or specialty ladders—each job calls for the right one.
- Check Capacity: Your ladder must support your body weight plus any tools or materials.
- Inspect Before Use: Look for cracks, bends, or loose rungs. If damaged, tag it and remove it from service.
Setting Up Correctly
- Solid Ground Only: Place ladders on flat, stable surfaces. Use levelers on uneven terrain.
- Mind the Angle: Use the 4-to-1 rule for extension ladders—1 foot out for every 4 feet of height.
- Secure the Top: Always tie off or stabilize the ladder to prevent shifting.
Climbing Smart
- Face the Ladder: Maintain three points of contact at all times.
- Don’t Overreach: Keep your belt buckle between the rails. Reposition when needed.
- One at a Time: Ladders are built for single-person use only.

- Proper Footwear: Clean, slip-resistant shoes give better grip.
- Hands-Free Tools: Use tool belts or ropes to carry gear—not your hands.
- Stay Aware: Always watch for power lines, low ceilings, and nearby hazards.
